Operation Day

On arriving at the Urology waiting room at 7.00am I was one of about a dozen people booked in for surgery.  I later found out that they schedule a ‘Morning Batch' and an 'Afternoon Batch.’  Another long wait ensued and it was not until about 11.30am that I was called for and escorted to theatre where a team of 3 or 4 welcomed me, checked out who I was and explained what was going to happen.  The anaesthetist put the mask to my face and I remember looking at the clock – it was 11.45am.

My next recollection was waking up in the recovery ward, being asked if I would like a cup of tea, a sandwich or biscuits.  My first reaction was that I had a very urgent desire to go to the toilet, the nurse assigned to me said I would have to wait for an hour and the sensation of being desperate was as a result of the surgery.  Secondly the wait is required so that the Mitomycin C (an anti-cancer drug) had time to seek out and kill any cancerous cells.

One thing that was not explained was that after the operation; Men are advised to sit on the toilet when passing water (as the ‘aim is a bit off’).  I read about this in one of the discharge documents.  I was also advised that passing water would be a bit painful, a stinging sensation and that further blood would be passed and it would be a good idea to buy some ‘panty-liners.’

I enquired as to when I could start cycling again and was told not for 6 weeks.  I contacted Skyline Events https://www.londonbrightoncycle.co.uk/about-us/  and they agreed to carry my application over to 2020 if I did not consider myself fit enough to complete the ride on Sep 15th 2019.
