I set up my challenge of the London to Brighton cycle ride on 15th September 2019, this to raise funds for Fareham Nomads Swimming Club so that the club could build their own pool.
This was to prove to be one of the most significant decisions that I have made throughout my then 72 years. I have never done any serious cycling apart from when I was about 14/15 years old; I visited a school friend, he lived in Queens Terrace, Southampton and I in Lewisham, London.
Training commenced, sponsorship started to come in, the Masters of FNSC bought me a Garmin 130 to help me track my training, all was going very well. I had even started to lose a few pounds, which was more difficult than the training rides. I have (I think) always been relatively fit so increasing from 5 miles to 10, then 15 with the occasional one of 20+ miles did not take too long.
